50 Years of Sturgis
50 Years of Sturgis
1990

1990 was the fiftieth anniversary of Sturgis Bike Week and with four years of previous documentaries about Sturgis and with all of our contacts and alliances we had made over the years we set out to make the definitive documentary about this world famous event.

We shot from helicopters, we had cameras strapped to motorcycles; we had cameras positioned in strategic and dangerous places on the hill climbs and racing tracks.  Making this program was a lot of fun and was very successful world wide, both as a special interest video and a TV program.  It was translated into French, German, and Japanese.

Since we had tons of footage of all sorts of motorcycle racing and could only use a little bit of it in our traditional Sturgis and Daytona videos, we created Racing America as an outlet for all the great stuff we had.  We sold this through our normal distribution lines, but also did an extensive direct mail piece using the huge mailing list we had accumulated over the years.

This was the next step for Daytona videos.  We had two Beta SP crews and unlimited access to the Chopper Shows, Vintage Bike Shows, and many celebrities.  We unleashed Wayne Crane to do the crazy stuff for which he is so well known... Again, well distributed and well received by the biker audience.

This was a great program – as good as 50 years of Sturgis, but Daytona was not as enamored with the Anniversary thing as the bikers in Sturgis.  In Daytona, it was just another bike week, but the quality of the events was superb and we went way out to make a good program.  We had the same two crews shooting Beta SP and had great graphics and artsy photography for which we have become known.  This program didn’t sell near as well as 50 years of Sturgis, which was a shame, but then the Sturgis video set a very high standard.  Many of our devoted biker clients have mentioned that the 50Years of Daytona was a real “sleeper”, (that’s in the racing term of sleeper).

This video was produced by our friends at Historical Video Productions and produced by Norm Fish.  We did the graphics for this production both cover design and inserts in the video case and video graphics inside the program itself.  This is a great video if you’re into trains.
